  • THE SEPTEMBER RESET: WHY LATE SUMMER IS THE PERFECT TIME TO REFOCUS YOUR BUSINESS

Woman refocusing on her business while working on a laptop by the pool

January gets most of the attention when it comes to fresh starts. New targets are set, strategies are discussed and calendars begin filling with plans for the year ahead. But for many businesses, the real opportunity for a second start comes with a September reset.

After the slower rhythm of summer, teams return from holidays, clients become more active and projects that seemed comfortably far away in June suddenly have deadlines attached to them. The final months of the year are approaching, but there is still enough time to make meaningful progress.

Late summer, then, becomes a natural moment to pause and take stock.

Not a complete reinvention of the business, and certainly not an excuse to create another long list of goals. Instead, it’s an opportunity to look at the year with fresh eyes. What has worked so far? What hasn’t? Which priorities still deserve your attention, and which ones are simply taking up space on a plan written months ago?

Before September gets busy, there is value in asking those questions.

Before Looking Ahead, Look Back

By late summer, enough of the year has passed to see things more clearly than you could in January.

Plans that looked promising at the beginning of the year have had time to prove themselves. Some projects may have performed better than expected, while others have moved slowly or lost their relevance altogether. New clients, changes within the team or unexpected opportunities may also have shifted the direction of the business along the way.

Yet when September arrives, there’s a temptation to simply pick up everything that was left on the desk before summer and start running again.

A better approach is to spend some time looking backwards first.

Think about what has genuinely moved the business forward since January. Which projects produced results? Where did the team spend more time than expected? Which ideas kept being postponed, and is there a good reason they never became a priority?

This isn’t about turning August into an annual performance review. It’s about separating what still matters from what you’re continuing simply because it once appeared on the plan.

A goal written in January doesn’t automatically deserve a place in September.

Businesses change. Priorities change. Markets change. And sometimes the smartest decision isn’t finding a new way to complete an old objective, but recognising that your attention would now be better spent somewhere else.

Four Months Is Longer Than It Sounds

September can create a strange sense of urgency.

Summer is ending, Christmas suddenly doesn’t seem very far away, and conversations quickly start turning towards the final quarter. It’s easy to look at the calendar and feel as though the year is practically over.

It isn’t.

Four months is enough time to launch a project, improve a process, develop an important client relationship, bring a team closer together or make significant progress towards a business objective.

But four months probably isn’t enough time to do everything.

That’s where a good September reset becomes less about motivation and more about choosing.

Instead of reopening every unfinished project from the first half of the year, decide which few things would make the greatest difference if they were completed by December. Some goals may require the full attention of the team; others might only need one final push. And there will almost certainly be things that can wait until next year without causing any real harm.

The aim isn’t to make the final months of the year as busy as possible. It’s to make them count.

Business planning for a September reset

September is a natural time to review priorities and refocus on the months ahead.

Decide What You’re Not Taking Into September

Fresh starts are usually associated with adding things: a new objective, a new routine, a new strategy or another project.

But perhaps one of the most useful things a business can do at this point in the year is remove something.

There may be meetings that no longer need to happen every week. A project might still be open even though nobody is particularly convinced by it anymore. A process introduced months ago may have become more complicated than the problem it was supposed to solve. Even a small recurring task can quietly consume hours when repeated across an entire team.

Late summer gives you an unusual opportunity to notice these things because normal routines have already been interrupted. People have taken holidays, schedules have changed and some activities may have temporarily slowed down.

Pay attention to what happened when they did.

Did a weekly meeting disappear for two weeks without anyone missing it? Did a simpler process work perfectly well while someone was away? Did a project stall because it genuinely needs attention—or because nobody really believes it’s important anymore?

Those are useful clues.

A September reset shouldn’t leave your business with a longer to-do list than it had before. Done well, it should create more space for the work that actually matters.

Make Reconnecting Part of Your September Reset

September doesn’t begin on the same day for everyone.

One colleague may have returned from holiday in mid-August while another is still away. A client might suddenly restart a conversation that has been quiet for six weeks. Someone else may have spent the summer covering a colleague’s responsibilities and now has a completely different view of what needs attention.

By the time everyone is back, it’s surprisingly easy for a team to be working from slightly different versions of the same plan.

That’s why the first useful conversation in September probably shouldn’t be a meeting with forty items on the agenda.

It should be a simpler one.

Where are we now?

Not where you expected to be in January. Not where the original business plan says you should be. Where are you actually?

From there, the conversation becomes much more useful. What changed over summer? What needs attention first? What are the two or three priorities everyone should understand? And, just as importantly, what can the team stop worrying about?

For SMEs and growing teams in particular, clarity can be more valuable than another ambitious plan. When everyone understands what matters for the months ahead, people can make better everyday decisions without constantly checking whether they’re working on the “right” thing.

And perhaps that’s the real purpose of a September reset: not to return to where you were before summer, but to decide where you want to go next.

Change the Environment, Not Just the Plan

A reset on paper only goes so far.

You can rearrange priorities, update the calendar and agree on new objectives, but if everyone returns to exactly the same routines in exactly the same environment, it can be surprisingly easy to fall back into old habits.

Sometimes a small change of setting is enough to shift the way people approach a problem.

That might mean taking the team somewhere different for a planning session, working away from the usual office for a day or simply creating more opportunities for people to work together in person. It can also be a good moment for a team-building activity, particularly after a summer when holidays and different schedules may have kept colleagues apart for several weeks.

For hybrid teams especially, September can be a useful moment to reconnect and reconsider not only what the team is working on, but how and where that work happens.

This doesn’t require reinventing the working week. A change of environment can be occasional and still make a difference. A focused morning together, an afternoon away from everyday interruptions, or even a team-building activity designed to get people collaborating again after the summer can help reset the dynamic before the busiest months begin.

There’s a reason some ideas seem easier to find when you’re somewhere new. Changing your surroundings can interrupt the autopilot of everyday routines and encourage people to approach familiar questions from another angle.

And after summer, that may be exactly what a team needs.

Don’t Fill September Before It Begins

There is another temptation that comes with returning from summer: trying to make up for lost time.

Suddenly the calendar starts filling again. Meetings return, postponed projects restart, clients get back in touch and everything that was labelled “we’ll look at this after summer” arrives at roughly the same time.

Before long, September can become one of the busiest months of the year.

But a full calendar isn’t necessarily a sign of a productive business.

If you’ve just spent time deciding what really matters for the rest of the year, protect some space for it. Not every free hour needs another meeting, and not every idea needs to become a September project.

The same applies at team level. If every person returns from summer with a completely full schedule, there’s little room for collaboration, unexpected problems or the opportunities you couldn’t possibly have planned for in August.

A useful plan should give direction without accounting for every minute.

Leave Some Room for the Unexpected

Business rarely follows the calendar as neatly as we’d like.

A new client might appear. A project could take longer than expected. Someone may leave or join the team. An opportunity that wasn’t even being discussed in August could become one of the most important developments of the year.

This is why planning the final months shouldn’t mean trying to predict everything that will happen during them.

Instead, think of the plan as a framework. You know where you want to go and which priorities deserve attention, but there should still be enough flexibility to respond when circumstances change.

This matters particularly for SMEs and growing businesses, where a single new opportunity can sometimes change priorities remarkably quickly.

The objective isn’t to follow the September plan perfectly until 31 December.

It’s to make better decisions when reality inevitably changes it.

Flexible business planning framework

What Should Your September Reset Achieve by December?

There’s a useful question to ask before September begins:

When you reach December, what would make you look back and feel that these four months were well spent?

The answer doesn’t necessarily need to be a revenue figure.

Perhaps it’s finally completing a project that has been sitting unfinished for months. Maybe it’s improving the way your team communicates, developing a stronger relationship with existing clients or creating a healthier routine after a particularly demanding first half of the year.

For another business, success might mean saying no more often and concentrating on fewer, better opportunities.

Thinking about December from the perspective of August changes the conversation. Instead of asking how much you can fit into the remaining months, you begin asking what would actually make those months worthwhile.

That’s a much more useful question.

The September Reset Doesn’t Need to Be Dramatic

Perhaps that’s the most important point of all.

A September reset doesn’t require a new strategy, a complete reorganisation or an ambitious collection of goals for the final months of the year.

Sometimes the most valuable changes are much smaller: dropping a meeting nobody needs, bringing the team together for a proper conversation, choosing three priorities instead of ten, changing your environment for a day or finally deciding that a project you’ve been carrying since February simply isn’t worth carrying into autumn.

September gives businesses a natural moment to do that because the rhythm has already changed.

The question is whether you simply return to the old one.

A Different Perspective

January will come around again soon enough, bringing another round of resolutions, forecasts and plans for the year ahead.

But there’s no reason to wait until then to make a change.

September doesn’t have to mean returning to exactly where you left off before summer. It can be an opportunity to reconsider what’s working, leave behind what isn’t and approach the final months of the year with a clearer sense of direction.

You don’t necessarily need a new plan. Sometimes, you simply need to look at the existing one from a different perspective.

See Things Differently. And then take that different perspective with you into September. Four months may not sound like much, but used well, they’re more than enough time to make the end of the year look very different from the way it looks today.
