Sterre, a 22-year-old Belgian artist, holding a bachelor’s diploma in liberal arts, recently came to CONNECTICLUB’s Coworking Center, creating a painting titled ‘Liminal Malta’. Inspired by the view of the Mosta Dome from the CONNECTICLUB Cobalt room, Sterre shared insights into her background, motivations, and the meaning behind her artistry.

The story behind her art

“Art is something that feels natural to me”, Sterre begins. “I’ve never thought of delving into anything other than the art world; it has become second nature to me”. For Sterre, painting is not just a passion but a source of profound tranquility. “When I paint, I find complete peace; I lose track of time, and the world around me fades away”,  she shares.

Liminality

This deep connection to her craft is reflected in Sterre’s choice of style. “That’s why I prefer creating abstract or surrealist pieces”, she explains. “I want viewers to experience a momentary escape from reality when they gaze at my art. Yet, I also aim to infuse a sense of familiarity into my work”.

Sterre’s paintings often feature shapes and forms that invite viewers to interpret them uniquely, tapping into the human mind’s tendency to seek familiarity in the unfamiliar—a concept she refers to as liminality.

“Liminality represents a transitional phase“, Sterre elaborates. “It’s the space between what we know and the exploration of the new. Embracing the unknown pulls us out of our comfort zones and allows us to see life from different perspectives”.

Inspirations

When asked about her inspirations, Sterre mentions acclaimed artist Oscar Murillo. “His mastery of colors, textures, and composition is truly inspiring”, she remarks. “I enjoy abstract art because it doesn’t immediately reveal itself; it requires viewers to linger and engage their imagination”.

Sterre’s journey as an artist embodies a deep-rooted passion for evoking emotions and sparking introspection through her creations. Her art not only captivates the eye but also invites viewers to explore the realms of imagination and contemplation—a testament to the transformative power of artistic expression.
